Silicone Scar Sheets

Silicone Scar Sheets

People ask me all the time which is the best silicone scar sheet. I know a lot about silicone scar sheets from extensive research and experience and below I’ve organized all my research into a concise summary to help others decide which is the best scar sheet for them. So putting all the hype aside about what’s the best, let’s just look at the facts.

The truth is that they all work if you can get them to stay on your scar and cover it completely.(more on this later) There is no need to pay a lot for a silicone scar sheet.

Even though they are very affordable, the Scar Away pads are the most cost effective solution. There are 12 pads. On one side of this pad is fabric and on the other side is the silicone sheet. These pads last for 12 weeks.

The only problem with the Scar Away Sheets is that they are very difficult to find at your local pharmacy. Because they tend not to stock them, shopping online is usually the only way to get them.

ScarAway Silicone Scar Sheets Review

ScarAway is designed to restore discolored and raised scars to a more natural appearance. The ScarAway pads work using specially designed silicone sheets. Silicone scar sheets like ScarAway are able to soften and flatten raised scars. They are the only FDA approved product for scars.

Although not every scar will be able to be removed completely, raised scars improve 85% of the time. Doctors have used the treatment for over 25 years to improve the appearance of scars. This technology is the same technology used and trusted by burn centers and plastic surgeons except now with ScarAway is available to you over the counter and at a fraction of the cost.

If you have scars whether they are old or new from burns or surgical procedures ScarAway silicone scar sheets can help improve your scar significantly.

How Does ScarAway Work?

It is not known how ScarAway works. However, it is speculated that they work by trapping moisture around the scar, providing a scar healing environment. Scars are formed due to misaligned collagen in the skin.

ScarAway is able the realign the damaged collagen to make skin look more like the surrounding tissue. The best part is that there is no need for painful surgery or cortisone steroid injections.

What Are the Drawbacks?

neck scarThere are several drawbacks to ScarAway scar sheets. The biggest problem is that they take a long time to work. Further, you must wear them for the majority of the day only removing them to wash the sheet.

On contoured parts of the body it is hard to get the pad to stick. That’s why for contoured parts of the body we recommend using hypafix tape to secure the pad.

After about 3 or 4 days of use, the adhesive on the silicone sheet can become weaker and fall off more easily. Most people change the pad once the stickiness goes away.

However, the pad continues to function regardless of the stickiness. So if you want to extend the life of the pad or find it doesn’t stick well you can use hypafix tape to hold the pad in place. For sanitary reasons you should change the pad when it gets dirty.

It is best to try to wear the silicone sheet for 24 hours for the best results. When doing activity that will make you sweat you should remove the pad to extend its life. So if you have to take the pad off for exercise or if you have to go out you should considering getting a silicone gel along with the gel sheeting such a kelocote.

Customer Feedback

Scientific evidence is always helpful however I also researched actual consumer sites to see what people were saying about ScarAway so I could get some balanced feedback. On a whole most of the reviews I read were very positive.

Here’s what one customer had to say about ScarAway?

I developed a reddish purple thick rope like textured scar after a surgery a few years ago. I previously tried every over the counter cream and sheet and even an expensive cream from my dermatologist. Nothing worked. My scar was over three years old and I had nearly given up hope when my doctor recommended trying Scaraway sheets. After just a few days my scar was noticeably softer and after a few weeks, the itching was gone and it was flatter and less red. After 10 weeks I cannot believe the results. My scar has virtually vanished. I am extremely pleased with this product, and thrilled to be able to wear certain clothes again after years of covering up my scar. My only negative is that it was hard to find, so, I’m glad I found these silicone scar sheets! (Lori D)

dermatix

A new study featured in the August Issue of the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery claims that Dermatix, a topical Silicone scar cream, improves burn scars and lessens the itchiness associated with healing. Burns typically result in scarring because they cause deep dermal injuries.

As the skin heals, there is pain, itchness, redness, and deep pigmentation. Burn scars have traditionally been treated with steroid injections, compression garmets, and silicone scar sheets. Silicone scar sheets have proven to be helpful in improving scar appearance by realigning collagen in scar tissue. However, it is difficult to wear them on highly visible areas, jointed, and curved areas of the body. Because the sheets trap moisture, they can cause irritation or maceration.

Dermatix was developed to address all the disadvantages of silicone scar sheets. The silicone cream can be applied thinly over the scar to form a flexible coating that does not restrict movement. Unlike Silicone Scar Sheets, cosmetics can be applied on the top of the gel to camouflage the scar.

A double blind study was conducted by Martijn van der Wal, M.D., VU University Medical Center, in Netherlands to test how effective Dermatix and silicone creams are in treating burn scars.Twenty-three patients with 46 scars participated in the study and were followed for a year. Each patient had 2 separate scars. The average age of the scars was 4 months. For the experiment, each patient received two products. The patient was instructed to apply one of products to one of their scars and the other product to their other scar. The products were to be applied twice a day and they had to be applied to the same scar and not interchanged. One product was a placebo cream and the other product was Dermatix. The results were evaluated at 1,3,6, and 12 months.

The silicone gel treated scars were significantly less rough and less itchy at the end of 3 months. However, in terms appearance observers rated the treated scars only slightly better. The results of this study show that silicone gels significantly improve the roughness of the scar and ease itchiness, but the appearance of the scar may be improved by the simple act of massaging the scar with any cream.

Where can I find Dermatix?

Dermatix is a silicone cream developed in the Netherlands. You can not find it at your local drug store. However, you can get it online through this link.

Kelo-cote Review

kelocote

I have an extensive burn scar on my neck. Kelocote was the first product my physician recommended for my keloid scar. Kelocote is a silicone gel that is supposed to improve and reduce the appearance of both old and new scars. Because it’s a gel it can be applied to scars anywhere on the body. The product does work. If you are patient and consistent you will see results.

Apparently, Kelocote has a patented ingredient called siliclear, which to me is just marketing to make the gel appear to be different. Although there are many different silicone gels out on the market, the only proven ingredient in them that reduces scars is silicone. Kelcote is appealing because it is a little cheaper than other silicone creams. Like any scar treatment, it is still expensive. Kelocote is recommended by surgeons, dermatologists, and leading specialists because it is clinically proven to improve scars. It’s been featured in beauty magazines such as Allure and Cosmetic Procedures. You can get it from Amazon  through this link.

A  3rd Party Board Certified Recommends Kelocote :

Let’s take a look at all of the Kelocote advantages.

  • Transparent, odorless gel
  • Cosmetics can be applied over Kelo-cote® once dry
  • Easy and painless to apply – no removal neccessary
  • Suitable for sensitive skin
  • Self-dries to an invisible, breathable sheet within 4–5
  • Ideal for most parts of the skin, including the face and joints
  • No maceration
  • Works on both old and new scars

I find silicone gels aren’t as effective as silicone scar sheets because the gels don’t provide pressure. However, Kelocote gel works well in combination with a silicone scar sheet or on areas that you can’t apply a silicone sheet on. I use Kelocote when I have to go out and don’t want to wear a silicone sheet out in public.

My biggest problem with Kelocote is that it is very easy for it to be wiped off. I find it is best not to cover the area that I apply Kelocote so that it will not rub off. Few people have noted that the gel never really dries. Most people use the product incorrectly. You want to apply a very thin layer of the gel over the scar not lather it on real thick otherwise it will not dry. This way the gel will dry and the tube will last longer.

The gel is supposed to improve new scars within 3 months but honesty from my experience I think you have to use it at least six months to year to see real results. Since I have an older scar, it could take a few years for my scar to improve. I have noticed that since applying Kelocote that my scar has become softer and flatter after about 9 months. This is not an overnight miracle but according to the research it is proven to work so I will continue to be using this product until I find something cheaper or more effective.

The Good
  • Invisible
  • Some of the benefits of silicone scar sheets without the sheet
  • Research shows it works on raised scars
The Bad
  • Can stain clothes
  • Can be rubbed off. Must be applied frequently to be effective.
  • Works best on newer scars and takes a long time to see results
  • Works but not a miracle

Let’s see what others have to say about it

By D.T.

I’ve been using Kelocote for nine months at my surgeons recommendation for some new, large scars. It’s hard to really say how much it helps with the appearance of the scars since I don’t know what would’ve happenend without it but my gut tells me it has helped some. I still have some nasty keloid scars but they seem to be softening.

One thing I am certain about is that it has helped with the soreness and itching that can come with new scars. I’ve had very little of that.

Make sure you use it right. A little goes a long way. Don’t over-cover the scars. You should barely be able to feel that it’s there. A common mistake.

Dermatix Review by Randy

Dermatix ultra scar gel is silicone gel sheeting without the sheet. Because it’s a gel, Dermatix is able to change its shape to align itself to the contours your body. This allows it to be used on parts of the body that silicone sheets could never work on such as the knuckles.

This product is recommended by plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and leading specialists because it is clinically proven to soften, flatten and smooth scars. The product works better on new scars but can work on older scars. Dermatix used to not be available in the United States but now thanks to Amazon, you can get it here.

Let’s take a look at all of the Dermatix advantages.

  • Quick drying, convenient and easy to use
  • Transparent and discreet
  • Indicated for the use on sensitive skin, children and patients with high risk of scarring
  • Maintains the skin’s moisture balance
  • Provides elastic protection to the skin
  • Ideal for most parts of the skin, including the face and joints
  • No maceration
  • Semi-permeable

In general, silicone gels aren’t as effective as silicone scar sheets because the gels don’t provide pressure. However, we especially like Dermatix scar gel in combination with a silicone scar sheet. Most people are most self conscious about scars on the visible part of their body such as their hands and face. If you have a scar on a visible portion of your body it is impractical to wear silicone scar gel sheets out in public. Enter Dermatix scar gel.

There is a recent study that shows that  Dermatix Silicone cream  is benefical for scars. You can view the study here. The downside is that the gel is ridiculously expensive and we just wish it were cheaper. The gel retails for $49 plus shipping. Currently, Amazon has the cheapest price. If cost is an issue , you should try Kelocote which has the same active ingredient of silicone. However, Dermatix does have additional ingredients that are proven to reduce scarring such as vitamin c which is proven to lighten scars.

The Good
  • Invisible
  • All the benefits of silicone scar sheets without the sheet
  • Research shows it works on raised scars
The Bad
  • Can stain clothes
  • Can be rubbed off. Must be applied frequently to be effective.
  • Costly but definitely worth it
  • Works best on newer scars and takes a long time to see results

I noticed definite results as my scars began to fade slightly within the first week. As time went on, the scars were definitely lighter in appearance. They haven’t gone away but it reduced them visibly, it’s not surgery or a miracle but it helped.view original review here.
